Potty training is one of the inevitable routines your little boy and you would have to go through someday. The rule of thumb is to provide a little bit of an encouraging “push” when the boy is old enough, but not too much as they need to be potty trained at their own pace.
You can start your little boy with his own separate potty. Start him sitting for both peeing and pooping. Postpone the skill of standing while peeing until later when the kid can properly control it. You might want to turn over the “aim” training to dad.
A common practice is to sit the boy on the potty chair when he wakes up every morning and after naps. Watch for signs of “poop faces” – the slightly contorted face babies and toddlers make when they feel like releasing their bowels. As soon as the poop face shows up, usher him to the potty.
